Supporting teaching and learning
about working collaboratively

The University of South Australia requires graduates to develop seven key skills, called Graduate Qualities, during their program. These skills, which include communication, problem solving and collaboration, must be assessed. The type of teaching approach promoted is student-centred, allowing greater choice and increased responsibility for students. As such lecturers encourage students to draw from their own experiences during their learning and learning opportunities situated within professional workplaces are encouraged. Flexible delivery is used to enable the achievement of Graduate Qualities and student-centred learning by enhancing the efficiency, flexibility and effectiveness of that learning.

This showcase describes a web site that provides learning and teaching support for working collaboratively. It uses a simple and proven model for supporting learning about the dynamics of successful collaboration and provides strategies for addressing problems with group dynamics. Users can explore the model of effective collaboration using images, text and animations. In addition, users are encouraged to self assess their understanding as they progress. Scenarios are included that allow users to practice their collaboration skills.

A section within the web site which is available to both staff and students describes options for authentic assessment of group collaboration. It includes strategies for assessing both the product of group work and also the process of group collaboration. Students can record their collaborative skill development using an electronic portfolio.

The site is being trialled and evaluated in 2005 as an effective, efficient and flexible way to provide learning support and professional development for changing practice within the broader University community.
