Web-based interactive tutorial activities in Greek art

Gina Salapata
Massey University, New Zealand

Art history and archaeology rely heavily on the study of images. This project arose out of a desire to emulate online the classroom/tutorial experience of studying and analysing images of Greek Art.

With the assistance of a web developer and programmer, I have created two websites for interactive distance learning used by students in Greek Art and Greek Mythology.

In the Greek Art module, the activity assists students in dating art works. Each example provides different chronological periods in which to place the image. Errors in selection are used constructively providing hints on which elements of the image to pay attention to in order to arrive at the correct dating. Correct answers are accompanied by a list of questions guiding students to justify consciously their selection.

In the Greek Mythology module, the activity assists students in the identification of figures involved in mythological depictions. By clicking on the figures students can see not only the correct answer but also a series of questions that guide them to justify their answer by referring to the specific features on which they based their identification.

These virtual tutorial sessions can be used at the students' own pace, providing immediate and constructive feedback, while allowing them to reflect before they see the correct answers. Above all they engage students in an interactive teaching/learning activity that encourages a deep approach to learning.
