Grants and Prizes

1.	The University of Sydney, Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) Creative Presentation Award
	The ITL Creative Presentation Award recognizes and encourages excellence in the scholarly communication of knowledge in a conference presentation. The purpose of the award is to foster engaging and innovative presentations at the HERDSA conference. One of the stated aims of the 2005 conference was to create new spaces for conference participants to engage with presentations. One of the main ways in which this aim will be achieved is through the ways in which conference papers are presented. This award encourages presenters to help achieve this aim and helps set a standard for future HERDSA conference presentations. The award is open to all paper and showcase sessions. Prize: Free registration at 2006 HERDSA conference. Process: The award is made based on the evaluation of the presentations by session chairs and three randomly selected session participants. 2.	Taylor and Francis Prize for the best paper by a new researcher
	Closing Date: 30th April 2005
	Applications are invited for this Prize which will be presented at the 2005 HERDSA Conference. The purpose of the award is to foster original research by encouraging new and less experienced researchers. A prize of A$1000 will be awarded to the paper written by a new researcher (or researchers) which makes a significant contribution to research in the field of tertiary education. 3.	HERDSA Travel Awards for Postgraduate Students to attend the conference
	Closing Date: 30th April 2005
	An award is available to provide support for a postgraduate student to attend and participate in the annual conference of HERDSA

		An award of up to $1,000 to assist a student incurring significant travel costs (i.e. living more than 500 kms from the conference site)
		An award of up to $500 to assist a local student attending the conference

4.	Edith Cowan University Authentic Learning Award
	Closing Date: 30 April 2005
	Applications are invited for the Edith Cowan University Authentic Learning Award which will be presented at the 2005 HERDSA Conference. The purpose of the award is to promote the development of authentic learning environments in all facets of university teaching and learning, and to support the dissemination and publication of good practice associated with these environments. An authentic learning environment can be described as one where activities represent the types of complex tasks performed by professionals in the field, rather than decontextualised or contrived activities. Students have access to supporting resources and engage in collaboration, articulation and reflection as they produce outcomes typical of quality performance. The award will comprise a certificate and prize of $1000 and it will be awarded to the paper which in the opinion of a panel of judges makes a significant contribution to knowledge about authentic learning environments in higher education. 5.	New Zealand Post-Graduate Award
	Closing Date: 30th April 2005
	The New Zealand branch of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) is pleased to offer a conference award to a New Zealand-based postgraduate student for 2005. This award has been created to provide support for a postgraduate student enrolled in a New Zealand tertiary institution and studying towards a postgraduate degree with a research component (ie, a thesis, dissertation, or research requirement equivalent to at least two papers’ worth of study). The award will provide support for the successful applicant to attend and participate in the HERDSA Conference in Sydney, 3-6 July 2005 and will be to the value of $1000.
