One of learning outcomes named in Curtin University’s Graduate Attribute list is ‘Communicating effectively’ and another attribute includes the ability to think ‘reflectively’. The author has lead a team from the Division of Humanities over the past two years who teach first year engineering students to develop reflective communication skills relevant to their discipline. Thinking and writing reflectively do not come ‘naturally’ to the majority of students who enrol in our engineering degree. This creates pedagogical challenges to keep tasks engaging and relevant to the first year students. This snapshot presentation will demonstrate the strategies we use to help students become reflective learners and begin to confidently acculturate themselves into the discourse of their discipline.
