| A learning portfolio is a collection of selected materials by a learner to demonstrate the learning progress and reflection. The paper describes an initial study on using learning portfolios to promote self-directed learning. The third year Bachelor of Civil Engineering students at Curtin University's Sarawak Campus in Malaysia created learning portfolios for the transportation engineering unit. Feedback was collected by anonymous survey about their experience of creating a learning portfolio for the first time. 22 students out of 25 in the class responded to the survey. It was found that learning portfolios had motivated the students to take more responsibility for their own learning and to self-direct their learning in order to meet the unit objectives through reflection. The majority of the students also responded positively, supporting its continued use as an assessment tool. |
