HERDSA 2010 program: Workshop four

Facilitating change and innovation in course renewal: An evidence based approach

Sonia Ferns, Barbara Whelan and Sue Jones

Curtin University of Technology, Australia

In response to increasing accountability measures from both external and internal stakeholders and growing competition in the higher education sector, Curtin University of Technology funded a strategic, high profile three year project, "Curriculum 2010" (C2010) which culminated in December 2009. The explicit aim of C2010 was to ensure that by 2010 Curtin would offer courses that were sustainable and excellent, resulting in workplace proficient graduates with a high level of satisfaction. One of the key tasks of this project was for every course at Curtin to undergo Comprehensive Course Review (CCR). During the course of the C2010 project, the following tools were developed to ensure an evidence-based approach: The Needs Analysis; and, The Curriculum Map. The tools are critical for promoting rigorous discussion with teaching staff and engaging them in the review process. The process of curriculum review employed by Curtin is inclusive of teaching staff, facilitating a sense of ownership. Through-out the review process, a curriculum map is created which generates visual representations of curriculum elements. Assessment practices are explored in detail and considered from a whole of course perspective.

The aim of this workshop is to actively involve participants in an evidence-based approach to reshape courses through Comprehensive Course Review. Participants will interact with samples of the CCR tools and interpret course data. Examples of how the resources may be contextualised and adapted for various stakeholders and the many uses of the tools for accountability and evidence based practice will be discussed and shared.
