HERDSA 2010 program: Workshop nine
Leading strategically: Teaching and learning development in shaping higher education
Dale Holt and Stuart Palmer
Deakin University, Australia
This workshop addresses the leadership sub-theme. It is based on the findings of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) project completed in December 2009 titled, "Strategic leadership for institutional teaching and learning centres: Developing a model for the 21st century". It will examine and develop understandings of strategic leadership in and around teaching and learning centres, and will be relevant to the leadership of devolved faculty-based academic development operations as well. The workshop looks at notions of strategic leadership for teaching and learning development from both hierarchical and distributed leadership perspectives.
The aim of the workshop is to develop participants' understandings of strategic leadership in advancing teaching and learning development in the changing contexts of higher education. The intended outcomes for participants include:
- To share and develop understandings of strategic leadership in teaching and learning development, with special focus on the changing nature of teaching and learning centres in Australian higher education
- To examine a number of strategies that can be implemented in dealing with some of the most pressing concerns in the work of teaching and learning centres
- To investigate areas where actions can be taken to maximise quality in teaching and learning throughout the institution
