Dr Kathy Takayama
Dr Takayama is the Director of the Sheridan Center for Teaching & Learning and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry at Brown University. Kathy holds a B.S. in Biology from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rutgers Medical School. As a scientist exploring the genetic responses of marine bacteria to the fluctuating ocean environment at the University of New South Wales, Kathy also became intrigued by her own classroom environment as a “research laboratory” and thus began her journey in science education and in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
She was selected as a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in 2003 and is a founding member of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL), serving as the first Regional Vice President (Australasia) of ISSOTL. She has received numerous teaching awards, including the David White Award for Excellence in Teaching (Australian Society for Microbiology), the Australian College of Educators Teaching Award, and the UNSW Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence. She was a founding member of the US National Science Foundation Biology Scholars Program, and created and co-chaired the NSF Biology Scholars SoTL Residency. In 2008 she was named National Academies Education Fellow in the Life Sciences by the US National Research Council. She serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and is Research Editor of the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education.
She has recently co-authored a book chapter with historian David Reichard entitled “Exploring Student Learning in Unfamiliar Territory: A Humanist and a Scientist Compare Notes”. Currently, she is Co-Principal Investigator on a 2-year study funded by the Teagle Foundation on Engaging Evidence to Improve Student Learning through Faculty Development at the Departmental Level.
Professor Elizabeth (Liz) McKinley

Elizabeth McKinley, of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Ngāi Tahu descent, has worked extensively in Māori education in New Zealand. In secondary schools she specialised in teaching science, and for fourteen years held lecturing and management posts at The University of Waikato before joining The University of Auckland in 2005. Liz was appointed the Director of the Starpath Project for Tertiary Participation and Success in 2007, where she has been responsible for project leadership and a team of researchers. The aim of the Starpath Project is to transform educational outcomes for Māori and Pacific students, and students from low decile schools with academic ability and potential, who are currently under-represented in degree level tertiary education.
Mr Jarrod Green
Jarrod Green graduated from the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science combined degree with First Class Honours in Chemistry and a University Medal. Jarrod worked with the UTAS Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) Program throughout his undergraduate degree, first as a PASS Leader facilitating study sessions in Chemistry and then as a senior PASS Mentor, a role dedicated to the ongoing support and training of interdisciplinary teams of PASS Leaders. In 2009 Jarrod was awarded a National Outstanding Senior PASS Leader Award in recognition of excellence and contribution to student learning. During his Honours year, Jarrod also worked as a laboratory demonstrator in the first year Chemistry course at UTAS. Jarrod is now studying towards a Master of Science Communication degree at the Australian National University and is a member of the Shell Questacon Science Circus, an outreach program that takes science shows and exhibitions to schools and communities in regional and remote Australia.
