Abstract

Hong Kong is now capitalizing its advantages in the geographic proximity and economic and social ties with Mainland China to develop itself as a regional hub of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With this broad background, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and other local universities established their academic units for TCM education consecutively. HKBU emphasizes whole person education and attaches greater importance on students' international exposures in order to realize the University' 7 Graduate Attributes, especially Citizenship, Communication and Teamwork. Our School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU, does not merely treat the ‘Reaching Out' as an extra-curricular activity, but rather a learning scheme embedded with assessment elements on actual performance and learning experiences, hence encourages and support such activities.

The showcase here demonstrates a successful case from a student who provides learning reflections after participating in the International Bio-Molecular Design (BIOMOD) Competition at Harvard University in 2013 and winning Silver Prize by teamwork, and Metropolitan Attachment Program in Chicago 2012 where he gained not only experience in academic research, but also team-spirit and communication skills. As recalled by this student, "the experience not only cultivated me to face and handle academic problems scientifically, lighted my passion and made me feel the joy of harvest after hardworking and teamwork, but also gave me an unique experience in education which consists of innovation, confidence and courage, three main component critical for my whole life."
