Abstract

There is a move across universities to assess using rubrics. This reflects a move toward the use of standards in education as a means of developing evaluation processes that ensure that graduates are prepared for the globalized world.

But what qualifies as a 'rubric', when should (and when shouldn't) a rubric be used, and how does one design and use rubrics in valid and reliable ways? This presentation examines the issues arising based on extensive work with staff across several universities on rubric development. It analyses and addresses these in relation to the assessment and evaluation literature to provide insights to staff on developing and using rubrics.
