Abstract

This paper explores the use of personal learning networks (PLNs) to empower student active learning in the cyberspace, in an attempt to support an appreciative college experience. PLNs have become increasingly portable in today's world of Web learning. Students possessing numerous mobile devices should be guided into using the same to get the most of their higher education. Thereby, the context of an appreciative form of college learning becomes important, enabling and encouraging students' efforts in the construction and use of PLNs to enrich their own studies. Through the lens of appreciative inquiry, it is envisioned that most student learning nowaday occurs outside the classroom walls, with peers and mentors kept in touch online around the world. This makes it timely compatible to reconsider the pedagogy required of the PLN mode of higher learning, and puts into perspective what education support system we need to empower student learning commensurate with the challenges of the 21st Century.
